Perched at the top of Stavrovouni mountain in the Larnaca district you will find the breathtaking Stavrovouni Monastery, one of the earliest documented monasteries on the island.
Translated it’s name means ‘the mountain of the cross’ deriving from the historical story that it’s founder, in 4th century, left a fragment of the holy cross there. More recently the monks here have a reputation for their icon painting.
Still a practising monastery, the monks live a very strict form of monastic life and women are still prohibited to enter. Despite this, ladies, it is still well worth the drive to visit the Monastery to take in the amazing view over Larnaca from the top of the mountain – stunning!
Just another part of Cyprus’ history that we love!
